Hyperbaric Chamber Tender / Operator Course

Bruce Koneffe, a very experienced local technical and cavern / cave diver in Pattaya, Thailand and great friend of Mermaids Dive Career Development Center has been offering Hyperbaric Recompression Chamber tours for those that are interested in this side of scuba diving. A tour of the DRASS Hyperbaric Chamber can be seen here. Although requiring this sort of treatment is very unlikely indeed it is very interesting to see the technology, expertise and the specifics that go behind the scenes at a chamber.

For some divers working the dry-side is more appealing as a dive career than diving itself. All commercial operations require hyperbaric recompression chamber operators and tenders - it is a diving career in it's own right..

*Coming in 2007* - The Hyperbaric Chamber Tender / Operator course

The Hyper baric Chamber course is 5 days in length. During the course the student will have a intensive Theory sessions. The topics covered during this session are as follows:

• Introduction - Students and ANDI - (American Nitrox Divers International)
  • Chapter One - An Overview of Hyperbaric Therapy
  • Chapter Two - The Physics of Gases and Oxygen Pathophysiology*
  • Chapter Three - Oxygen Handling and Safety Protocol
  • Chapter Four - Unit Specific Information
  • Chapter Five - Roles and Duties of the Chamber Operator and Tender

Along with the Theory sessions there will be plenty of hands on experience. Students will taught the proper procedures how to prepare the chamber for a treatment (dive) and what needs to be done to the chamber afterwards.

Other hands on experience includes:

• Actually controlling the chamber taking other diver students down to treatment depth.
• Operation of a MEDICAL LOCK.
• Operation of the Dual Entry Lock. (Chambers sometimes have a double lock, this allows someone like a Doctor to enter the main lock during the treatment).
• Logging appropriately all of the treatment.
• Working as a chamber communicator.

Students will also learn the duties of the INSIDE Tender. The Tender is the person who will set up the "Inside" of the chamber and also take care of the chamber after the treatment.

Students wishing to be a Recompression Chamber Operator/Tender do not necessarily have to be scuba divers. Students should have some type of CPR and Rescue training prior to taking the Chamber course.
