Lucky Land Rover with Mermaids Divers...
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! STANDBY,
ROLL TAPE, Aaaaand ACTION! Well, I never would have guessed that when I came to It was an average late afternoon at the dive shop with most people pretty much finishing up for the day. Dusk was setting in, and we were preparing for the usual evening antics in our local bar. Just as I was making my way out the door, en route to join my fellow Mermaids Divers, I heard the voice of our surrogate mother Malai calling me. Standing next to her was Pakawan Ketsroi (Pim) from P. Independent Modeling,
although I didn’t know this at the time. Pim explained she needed five male
scuba divers to appear in an advert for a car, and asked if I could round some
up for her. At this stage Pim only wanted to take photographs of the guys for a
casting process. Pim told me that the commercial would be shot over a two day
period, and gave me a rough idea of the plot. It sounded like it could be
interesting so being far from anything but a shrinking violet I donned my
“sexy man” radar, and proceeded with the hunt! Now I’ll apologize in advance guys, sorry! But, in all honesty it
wasn’t exactly difficult getting you all hooked in, now was it! As soon as the
words “modelling agency” were mentioned it was like a triton trigger fish
bit you all in the rear of your shorties! And, so it began! I really thought nothing would come of it, and that it was all just a bit of fun playing agent for an evening, and watching the guys pose...embarrassingly! However, the next day when the boats got back, there was Pim with the list of newly selected stars! Pim said the production house (Fast Time Productions Bangkok) now wanted to cast two women also. I grabbed four female dive interns (yes, we do exist here in the dive internship program!) and, they took to the shiny camera lights like fishes to water! Pim said she would be back the following day with the selection list of female extras, and asked if everyone could then be present to pose for an additional shot in full scuba gear. Now, for those of you that have never had to stand for a prolonged period
of time in thirty degrees of heat in full scuba gear, imagine giving the
heaviest person you know a piggy back whilst running round the block fifty
times, and then posing for a picture in an extremely hot sauna. All this without
sweating, and trying to look pretty! After I had finished mopping up the pools of sweat, and Pim had
(thankfully) put her camera away, she went back to After a couple of days went by I again thought nothing would transpire.
Then on the 25th of November, like a reliable boomerang that just
keeps coming back, there was Pim outside the dive center. This time she had come
to ensure that we had all the necessary dive equipment, and cylinders needed for
the two day period. We hired the bottles (Mermaids cylinders being in use) for
the day from our friends at The Dive Site. So after an hour of running around
double checking everyone would still be available, and all equipment would be in
place, Pim returned to After several telephone calls later that evening the time was arranged
for us to meet at the dive shop. Much gratefully adjusted from Morning arrived, as did Pim, and we were soon on our way to a secret
location in Chon Buri. After changing to a mini bus, and several stops at
service stations to buy copious amounts of supplies we arrived at the set! Well, our jaws positively dragged along the floor! Believing it would be a “budget” Thai commercial for some sort of new truck you can imagine our surprise when we saw two shiny new Land Rover Freelanders, professional cameras and, abundant mobile homes!
