Lucky Land Rover with Mermaids Divers... Written By Sonja Collyer - Mermaids Dive Intern (Trip
report) (continued) ... As we regained composure Kerstin, and Daniel were ushered
into the make up truck where we met Paul Sculfor, and Mari Elina Myllykoski the
main characters of the commercial. Slowly the storyline unfolded. The theme
being based on a guy (Paul) who has his tarot cards read in As Kerstin, and Daniel were being kitted out another scene was in the process of being filmed, so off I went snapping pictures here there, and everywhere. I snapped away that much the stills photographer thought he had some competition! The next sight that befell me, as I stepped back into the surreal world of the make-up van, was Daniel having his lips painted! Now, (he will murder me for this) I have never seen a man take to it so well! He puckered up splendidly! After myself, and Kerstin had stopped rolling around on the floor in laughter we were taken (still giggling) to the next location. The theme behind this scene was Now, if you remember my previous comments regarding wearing full scuba in hot weather then you can understand the looks of utter horror that flashed between Kerstin, and Daniel when they realized they would have to wear down jackets, fur hats, and gloves in thirty degrees for the remainder of the afternoon! At this point I began to eat the free doughnuts, whilst hiding in a cool air conditioned make up van! :0) After the make-up had been adjusted (to the point that the guys looked like they just returned from a two week expedition to Everest!) it was stand by, roll tape, and action! I think Daniel, and Kerstin were very pleased that for most of this scene they merely had to sit in the back of a brand new, air conditioned, Land Rover! (Unfortunately without the free doughnuts).
Then it was time for lunch, a rare free banquet courtesy of Land Rover,
which went down very nicely (even with all the free doughnuts) indeed. After
lunch we were again moved to new location, still in keeping with the The new set was amazing, with huge props that had been made to look like the coldest of winters. The star of the show (the car of course) strategically placed, and polished to perfection. They guys had more of a moving part this time in that they had two huge fans blowing the “snow” on them (aw bless em!) They worked so hard in the heat, and it really was such a lot of hanging around for most of the time due to the crew having to adjust cameras, and the set. After the words, “That’s a wrap!” had been yelled we made our way back to Pattaya. With an extremely tired Kerstin, and Daniel, who were soon snoring peacefully in the air conditioned mini bus, I set about making calls to ensure everything was in place for the following day. The next day we again met at the dive shop. This time with five additional dive interns, Jon Sussman, Olivia Kenney, Sam Williamson, David Kiely and, Justin Elliot. After loading up the gear, and collecting the bottles from The Dive Site, we were again off to a secret location. The new location that eight sleepy interns rocked up to during the early hours of the morning certainly was a far cry from the wintry wonderland we had to endure the previous day. Being based in Thailand, and having travelled South East Asia, I have seen some really nice beaches. The new location was certainly on par with some of the best I’ve seen. Today the shooting would take place on the beach near Sattahip Naval base, and our presence certainly brought with it some curious glances from all the military men on coffee breaks. The beach was adorned with various props making it look like a scientific research station, with the star of the show sparkling to perfection near the waters edge. After a succulent breakfast again provided by the hosts we were ready for the days task in hand. Once the director (Rob Sanders from Amarillo Films) had given his approval of equipment, and wetsuits, the guys began to don their gear in true intern fashion! The scene began with everyone in the water beaming bright smiles after their “amazing dive” they had just done. In Baywatch style (thankfully without the tiresome running in slow motion) they then climbed up the beach to “de-kit”. Behind the scenes it was sun tan lotion, water, and cooling towels at the ready for short breaks in between the takes, and believe me there were plenty of those! While myself, and Pim relaxed in picnic style fashion the rest of the guys set about putting their best fin forward (and, back again!) to represent Mermaids, and the dive society world wide. A few hours later those luscious words of, “That’s a wrap” were yelled, and everyone sighed a (sunburned) sigh of relief. While it was a fantastic two day experience, and a great giggle for us all, I can safely say we were all very relieved it was finally over, and that we could return to our “semi normal” lives again.
I think if you were to ask any of us to give up diving for a full time career in the film industry you would be responded by replies of, “not on your life mate!” I always thought that people in the film industry had an easy and lucrative life. Seems to me however, that it’s quite a high stressed, and hard working life! While I’m certainly not one to shy away from hard work give me a day on the boat when the compressors down with thirty odd customers than an eternity of lights, camera, and action any day! Well, I hope you’ve all enjoyed our short story of fame, and please do take the time to look at our famous photographs of the life, and times of a Mermaid intern on set! Watch this space for the end product which should be hitting the screens in your homes early 2007 across Europe, and US. “THAT’S A WRAP!!!”
