Mermaids Reef Check Pattaya - ThailandReef Check - Marine study and reef conservation

Mermaids dive center in Pattaya, Thailand now offer the ReefCheck Eco-Diver course for all divers that wish to get involved and begin making Coral Reef monitoring studies!

The Reef Check Eco Diver course is designed to teach you everything you need to know to conduct full scale Reef Check surveys.

In this program you'll learn about the globally standardized Reef Check methodology as well as how to identify key indicator fish, invertebrates and substrates selected by Reef Check for global monitoring and coral reef conservation.

The course is very in-depth and will leave you never looking at the reefs in the same way. The Eco Dive course will allow you to join the Reef Check monitoring team and assist in underwater surveys around the world.

The EcoDiver Course provides training in globally standardized Reef Check methodology. You'll learn how to identify different types of coral formation and to access whether they are healthy or damaged.

You'll identify key indicator fish and invertebrates selected by Reef Check for global monitoring and find out how to collect data that can be submitted to ReefCheck's global reef-monitoring database.

Reef Check Ecco Scuba Diver course includes a buoyancy check dive not just to refresh your buoyancy skills but teach you new methods of moving in the water. Mermaids require the diver to be Advanced diver with 25 dives to participate in the course to ensure good buoyancy and new skills shall be learned.

The Reef Check Eco-Diver Course is 7 days in length:

Program outline for Reef Check Eco Diver:

Day 1 Classroom
  • An introduction is given to the world of reefs and their importance to local communities and stakeholders. An introduction, background and the importance attached to the reef check system of coral reef monitoring as identified by local government, national government and the international community.

  • An overview of the reef check system is given, the prerequisites, the Reef check course standards and performance requirements.

Day 2

Class & Pool
  • Buoyancy workshop in the pool.

  • Introduction to Reef Check site description and reef impacts slate.

  • Introduction to Reef Check belt transect fish and invertebrates slate.

  • Introduction substrate line transect slate.

  • Dry run survey practice on land.

  • Site selection.

  • Data entry.

Day 3 On the boat
  • Dive 1) Substrate photo field identification test.

  • Dive 2) Fish and invertebrate photo field identification tests.

Day 4

Classroom
  • Invertebrate, Fish, and substrate photo identification tests.

Day 5 On the boat
  • Dive 1) Research of the dive site and evaluation of the reef.

  • Dive 2) Deployment of the reefbars and subsurface marker buoys.

Day 6

On the boat
  • Return to the transect site for a full Reef Check fish, invertebrate, and substrate survey.

Day 7

On the boat
  • Return to the original site for a repeat survey to check for accuracy and content detail. If successful submit data to the regional scientist for evaluation.

Reef Check Ecco Diver Course Materials:

Required materials: (Supplied)

  • Reefcheck DVD

  • Slates & Pencils

  • Plumb line and weight

  • Compass

  • 100 meter tape or line marked at 5 meter intervals and 50 centimeter intervals

  • Reef bars for permanent sites

  • Hammer and nails (5 inch)

  • Marking device

  • Note book

  • Blank slates for sketching or camera (20 day course only)

What's included: The cost of joining a Reef watch project includes all scientific, and marine project training, course materials, and equipment. Training to Advanced diver if required.

Pre-requisites: The student scientific diver is required to be a minimum of a PADI (or other agency) Advanced Diver with a minimum of 25 dives.

Costs: The 7 day Reef Check Eco Diver course is 22,000 Thai baht all inclusive. Mermaids Intern divers 18,000 Thai baht.
