How many Scuba Diving Interns train at any one time? ...and just how do we structure our dive education and training around them all? Easy, it's called preparation, readiness and
efficiency. On average we have approximately 15 interns (professional dive trainees) each month - this does fluctuate between 10 and 20 from month to month. We have interns that come for the full 6 months straight. We have dive interns that come for a couple of months and then visit home or go traveling or take a holiday. Then we have the interns that have work commitments and hence come to us for a month or two and then return to work. Having many trainee dive professionals (interns) at different stages in their dive education is not a bad thing - in fact it works for us to give an excellent amount of training experience for the dive interns. Each dive intern is set with a group of other interns. We have individual scuba instructors for each group. Whilst one intern is being trained the other interns are assisting with the particular dive course. For example, if an intern is taking the PADI Rescue Diver Course, then the other interns will assist with the training by playing the unresponsive diver, the missing diver or the group of scuba divers on the boat adding to the realism of the situation. This is essential to gain a fully rounded view of the programs. All of the interaction from the other interns during the course adds realism and also great fun to the training. It builds real camaraderie. I firmly believe that we have some of the best trained divers in Thailand coming through our courses as they get to see the skills and knowledge involved over and over. Take the rescue course for example. Our instructors will teach customers that are here for a holiday over a 4 or 5 day period and give 150% effort but no one can really learn all of the practical applications and mental preparation for a real situation in that short of a period. Dive interns get to take the course and then practice the skills over and over keeping all of the information and techniques fresh and reinforced firmly in their minds until they really are first class rescue divers - I must say that our boats must be the safest in Asia with so many well trained rescue divers on-board each day. As a dive intern you'll get to see each dive course over and over learning increasingly more each time to become the very best diver possible. As mentioned all of the trainees (interns) interact and assist with training. Once an intern has completed the skills circuit, exams and swim tests and been signed off as a divemaster; then they become an "Intern Mentor". The once fresh trainee, is now to be responsible for a new intern or couple that start and will be with them up until they in turn begin the dive master program. The mentor can share experiences with new interns, show them around and introduce them to the other interns and staff. The mentor will familiarize them with the area and show them the accommodation - they are basically a good friend. The mentor will take the interns out for a nice meal where they can relax, chat and ask any questions that they have in a great atmosphere. The mentor will responsible for:
All of the mentors appreciate that not so long back they were the fresh dive intern - all have been wonderful and very down to earth - we have a great team. You can now see how having such a large group of interns actually assists in training and the overall fun and education of the group. We believe in turning potential problems into a positive situation. As the Chinese say, "Every problem is a potential opportunity". Pictures of some of the interns
