PADI DSAT Deep Tec Basic Divers course

DSAT Tec Deep Diver (PADI)

Dave operates the Tec Deep courses at MermaidsTrained as a diver? Love to dive? Can’t find enough time to dive and when you do the dives are over before you know it? Been diving in a new location and not allowed to dive a certain site as too deep? Maybe you need some assistance. Meet Dave (to the rght) our resident Deep Tec and ~Tri-Mix Instructor

Let’s face it – scuba diving is addictive! Not exactly like Marmite but if you love it you really love it! Many find that recreational diving gives them all of the excitement and pleasure that they require – I must admit until very recently (mid-2006) this was my feeling.

One of Mermaids (Pattaya, Thailand) Tec Deep instructor (Dave (right)) had a course beginning so I thought that I’d tag along to see what all of the fuss was about…I now feel that I’ll be wearing a few additional tanks for certain dives in the future.

PADI – DSAT entered the ever growing technical diving market with excellent step-by-step programs to ease those recreational divers with the prerequisite experience and training needed into extending their depth (a little) and bottom time (significantly) beyond that of a recreational diver – essentially allowing potentially more adventure from every dive. The PADI/DSAT Tec Deep Diver course is the finest technical diver course currently on the market. It provides the diver candidate with step-by-step training, solid structure, and support material that is without equal in the industry.

Double scuba tank configuration for the course

The Tec Deep course is divided up into two main sections – The Apprentice Tec (Tec Diver Level 1) and the Tec Deep Diver (Tec Diver Level 2).

DSAT Tec Deep level 1 Diver- (Formerly Apprentice Tec Diver Course)

The Apprentice Tec Diver Course is aimed at those divers with a clear interest in tech diving, but who lack the prerequisite experience to fully enter the realm of tec – (or are happy to remain at this level).

The Apprentice Tec diver will be able to make gas switch, extended no-decompression dives using air and enriched air (Up to 60%) to 40 metres/130 feet using technical diving equipment and procedures. You’ll also prepare for and respond to foreseeable technical diving emergencies. Since its part of the Tec Deep Diver course, you DSAT Apprentice Tec Dive course training credits toward the DSAT Tec Deep Diver course.

The first 3 days cover the introduction of the skills in shallow waters (or swimming pool). Diving each day and covering the first part of the theory. The next 2 days are 2 dives a day on the boat putting the skills into practice with each day diving getting deeper or longer. After each dive, more theory is covered and then planning dives for the next day.

The DSAT Deep Tec Exam must be completed before dive 6, consisting of 100 questions of multiple choice on the theory and 20 questions of practical calculations of dive planning. Pass mark is 80% on each section of each exam. This concludes the Apprentice Tec Diver Course.

Dive students can either stop here and get certified as Apprentice Tec Diver or if meeting the pre-requisites for the Deep Tec Course, you many continue into that course.

Tec Deep Diver Course: (DSAT Deep Tec level 2 Diver)

The Tec Deep Diver course will qualify a diver to conduct gas-switch extended no-decompression dives, decompression dives and accelerated decompression dives using air and enriched air to a depth of 50 meters/165 feet. You’ll also understand the hazards and risks involved in technical diving, as well as how to prepare for and handle reasonable foreseeable technical diving emergencies. This is the approximate equivalent to other training agencies individual courses that would include: Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, and Extended Range .

All of the training through Apprentice Tec Diver will be made and then the final 3 days are spent doing one dive a day. Each dive is a decompression dive in the range of 45-50m. There is also an additional examination over and above the Apprentice exam.

NOW Working at Mermaids!

When we decided to travel to Thailand to do an Internship, everyone said to us you must be crazy!!! Sure with an 8 month old baby, we almost thought the same thing. Choosing the right Dive School was crucial for us to make our new life work and after many ups and downs searching for the right place and at the point of almost giving up our dream we contacted PJ and within hours joined up with Mermaids. Wow, they helped us with everything including finding us a fabulous nanny and a great apartment (all this before we even arrived) We have been here 7 months and are working on our MSDT and IDC Staff.

During this time, we’ve had great advice and instruction on all of our courses and ...

Good Times Leading to a Great Career!

Hey everyone, I just want to thank you all for a great 8 months in Pattaya. When I saw the website offering a scuba diving internship in Thailand I was a bit skeptical, but I have to admit it was one of the smartest moves I have made up to this point in my life. When you consider that I had NEVER been diving before coming to Thailand, and now I am a PADI professional, it is unbelievable. The hands on training provided by mermaids staff is second to none. They went out of their way to take the time to make sure I mastered the skills necessary to become not just a competent diver, but to excel and that’s what made it so special. So thanks to all you instructors, Russell, Claus, Manx, Dave...

Repeat Offender!

This is the second time I have been to Mermaids first was to do the Divemaster course which was very good and now the second which I have just done was OWSI!! All courses a taught to a very hi in the sky standard, the Course Directors, well they are the best around that’s for sure so Hats off to you Russell and Desi!! It’s been a pleasure to be part of Mermaids and I am sure I will be back!!

Divemaster Internship

After much internet research we contacted Mermaids to inquire about a divemaster internship, we received prompt and informative replies to all our questions, we also stopped by the centre on a quick visit and after seeing the operation and diving with the mermaids staff we were sold! We came to Mermaids initially for 3 months (that was 6 months ago) and after completing our DM course, we decided to stay for open water instructor training. The training at mermaids really is fantastic and having now successfully completed our OWSI training we decided to stay just a little bit longer to become specialty instructors. Not bad considering we only ever intended to be DMs!

We’ll have to ...

OWSI/MSDT Training with Mermaids

It's been 2 years since I finally completed my OWSI/MSDT training with Mermaids (I was one of those repeat offenders that just kept coming back!!)

Having now worked in the "real world" diving industry I cannot thank the amazing crew at Mermaids enough. I believe that you offer the best diver internship going around.

Several instructors I have worked with since have completed what is billed as "zero to hero" internships yet none of them have come out of their program with the kind of hands on experience and skills that I gained working under the likes of Russell, Desi, Ian B and Slinky and the awesome support staff at Mermaids.
