Wreck Diving Elephant Island
Mermaids Divers go to Koh Chang
Friday 29th November, 15 divers left Mermaids head office for the island of Koh Chang wreck diving. The trip down was easy going and in true Mermaids style, taking IT specialists is always handy except when their GPS gets everyone lost on the island, trying to locate the hotel. Eventually the hotel was found and everyone checked in and gathered for dinner and a few relaxing beers. We were all looking forward to the wreck diving and a lovely evening of laughs and fun ensued followed by a comfortable nights sleep.
After breakfast on Saturday and the roller-coaster ride to the pier 15 minutes away, everyone checked in at the dive center and travelled out to the dive site of the HTMS Chang. Dive one began down the bow descent line with water visibility up to 25m, which gave everyone a great view of the wreck. Seeing it’s expanse arising out through the blue was incredible. Making their way to the stern the divers encountered huge shoals of fish. The fantastic 45 minute dive ended with a safety stop on the tower at five meters. Lunch was provided by the Koh Chang dive center followed by Monica’s specialty – homemade apple pie.
Dive two was again bow to stern along the wreck and dive three was a nice easy coral dive on Square Rock, which is very similar to the coral sites of Pattaya.
Following Sunday check out at the hotel we enjoyed two more dives on the HTMS Chang. This time divers descended on the stern, with some penetrating and others playing on the superstructure which is like a jungle gym. Visibility was about 20m but gradually became four meters the deeper you dived. Dive three was on Flat Rock, again similar to the sites experienced around Pattaya.
After the three dives, all departed Koh Chang and had a few beers on the ferry. Everyone was back in Pattaya for about 10pm on Sunday night. Thanks to Mermaids staff and the divers ion attendance for a fabulous weekend and being great company on the evenings.
Until next time…
